Training: Started and shown in Kentucky, once here we have trail ridden this brave mare. She is fast and motivated at the walk/gait down the trail. More direct rein style but we are retraining her. Possibly suited for Intermediate riders who can handle a horse that likes to go! She is obedient but would prefer to move at gait! This will improve with time. She appears too be the type of horse to sit in the pasture for years (this is what happened prior to owning her) and returned to riding flawlessly without bad habits. I enjoy riding her bareback (very comfortable) with just a halter.

Personality: SWEEET and personable mare that is a fair herd mate and possibly middle/low dominance in the herd. She loves her time with humans and loves a generous scratch and a good brushing.

From one of the very biggest farms of Kentucky, this  mare is bred well top AND bottom. UNIQUE broodmare potential. Old lines make her ideal, TOCO Sam/ SEWELL'S SAM, his get are sought after.  China Blue is also in her pedigree, a well known Yankee horse. On the bottom another founding sire Kilburn's Chocolate Sundown.

Registered and certified, this mare is set in her gait. She has a nice low flat kneed movement, easy on the rider. She after foaling she will be ridden and conditioned. She hasn't been ridden in a few years but is extremely gentle and well mannered. I am conditioning her to move off the leg, turn on the hind, fore and side pass softly. She is FORWARD on the trails and has places to go, we expected that so we will continue her riding slow and less go. She was once probably a show horse! A brave girl though, easy to point through anything. She also is quite dependable, she rides with new people without doing anything dangerous or testing them. She is quite the gem!

She is 100% healthy. UTD on de-worming (4 times a year) and vaccinations (every year) as well as hoof trimming.  She does not have bad habits trimming or standing tied.
I would recommend this mare for a knowledgeable Horse person but also suited for families as she stands so quietly. She has a great personality to prove herself as an advanced beginner horse or possibly for a total beginner as she seems very honest.

About my training:

I utilize many training techniques to create a well-rounded horse. Whether you follow Pat Parelli, Ray Hunt, Nuno Oliveira, Clinton Anderson or other top trainers, we optimize the abilities of each horse to create a willing and dependable partner under saddle and a far more dependable horse on the trail!

Topanga is a super easy keeper. She is pasture managed (rotational grazing). I believe in a strong quality forage feeding program where most nutrients are provided through hay. I feed a slight alfalfa mix with a mix of prairie grasses (alfalfa only during pregnancy with this girl). As a quality supplement to fill in the gaps, different trace and white mineral blocks are provided free choice. She receives high quality forage and pasture grazing during summer months. During pregnancy she will receive a (SMALL AMOUNT) oat mix with her herd mates.

She gets along with all kinds. We have a mix of mares, geldings, pony, babies, yearlings, pregnant mares. As far as status she is more or less in the middle of the pack.  I have seen her assert herself only when needed and is a kind mare! Mostly she is friendly to others AND ignores others. This is unheard of for a mare in other breeds.

This mare is the complete opposite of anything you would describe mareish! I ride her through her cycles and barely notice (I actually do not notice at all!! She is still very friendly). Folks familiar with other breeds may think they want to avoid mares altogether. That is not the case with Rockies! So many people tell me they never would have thought the relationship with their mare would be as rewarding as it is. They are smart, willing, friendly and above all, loyal. Mares may have their opinions but as long as you are fair to them, they give you their ALL!

Topanga has toted our friends out on the trail!

She will get you places in gait! A very powerful and confident mare!
